Dr. Rev. Richard Gleason Greene was an only child of his parents Richard William Greene and Charlotte Gleason. He was born in E. Haddam CT, on June 29, 1829. His mother died July 3rd of 1829, just days after his birth. By 1852 he attended Andover Theological Seminary, Brooklyn NY, and in 1856 he married Augusta Ostrander, and had 3 children. Adele (never married), Frank (died young), Ernest Suydham married Margaret H. Dow and had 3 children. His wife Augusta died June 3, 1914, just less than a month before his death on July 7 1914.

The Rev Dr Richard G Greene. Died suddenly yesterday at his apartments in the Hotel Beresford, Manhattan. About 50 years ago, shortly after graduating from the Andover Theological Seminary, he was attached to the Bedford Congregational Church, which was absorbed by a neighboring parish many years ago. Since 1890 Dr Greene had engaged in editorial work, having edited the first edition of the Columbia Cyclopedia. He wrote many theological and philosophical books. He was 85 yrs old and is survived by a son and a daughter.

Wife: Augusta Ostrander is the daughter of Dr Ferdinand William Ostrander *1804-1895) and Sarah Ann Wright (1815-1890). She had 5 brothers and 4 sisters, and grew up in Brooklyn NY. Her father attended College of Physicians and Surgeons in Brooklyn NY in 1828.

Children

1. Adele Greene 1856-1914, never married. Adele was single and independent. After her parents’ deaths she is seen living in a hotel in Washington DC in 1910 Census. By 1920 she is 57, and living alone in a rental, in Chelsea Ma, employed as a school teacher. Last seen in 1930 Census, living as a boarder in Washington DC at the age of 72, address was 19th Street North West, near Dupont Circle (likely a hotel).

2. Frank Greene 1861-1862

3. Ernest Sydham Greene 1864-1937. A self employed architect, he married Margaret Herriman Dow in 1896, and had 3 children. Ernest Greene Jr, Margaret Dorothy Greene, and Lawrence Sydham Greene.
