The family moved to Madison Twp., Guernsey Co., OH between the births of John (1838) and William (1840), and Richard farmed there for the remainder of his life. HIs children, Alexander, Henry, Margaret and John were probably all born in Robinson Twp., Washington Co., PA.

The 1840 Census, taken in Madison Twp., Guernsey Co., OH listed the following:
1 male 5 (John); 2 males 5-10 (Alexander, Henry); 1 male 30-40 (Richard); 1 female

In 1850 the family consisted of Richard Bell, 44, born PA; Sarah Bell, 39, born PA; Alexander Bell, 19, born PA; Henry Bell, 16, born PA; Margaret Bell, 14, born PA; John Bell, 12, born PA; Wiliam Bell, 9, born OH; Moses Bell, 8, born OH; Mary Bell, 6, born OH; James Mc. Bell, 3, born OH; Sarah E. Bell, 1, born OH. Richard was a farmer whose real estate as valued at $2,000. Alexander and Henry were also farmers, probably farm labor on their father's farm. Alexander, Henry, John, William, and Moses attended school. Margaret did not (see 1870).

By 1860 Alexander and Henry had left home, but 2 additional children had been added to the family, which now consisted of Richard Bell, 55, Sara Bell, 49, Margaret Bell, 23, John Bell, 22, Moses Bell, 17, Mary J. Bell, 15; James Bell, 13, Sarah Bell, 11, and Martha Bell, 9, born OH, Amanda Bell, 7, born OH. Richard was a farmer whose real estate was valued at $7,100 and his personal property at $1,090. John’s personal property was valued at $40.

NOTE: Richard's son Moses A. Bell, 20, was a Corporal, Company B, 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He enlisted 17 Aug 1861 for 3 years. He was killed 1 Jul 1862 in action at Russellville, Franklin Co, AL His grave has not been located as of Jan 2021.

By 1870, more of the children were gone. The family consisted of Richard Bell, 65. Sarah Bell, 59, Margaret Bell, 43, James M. Bell, 22, Martha Bell, 18, Amanda Bell, 16. Richard was a farmer whose real estate was valued at $9,000 and his personal property at $1,000. Sarah was keeping house. James was a farm worker. Margaret was listed as “idiotic.”
NOTE: The census taker spellled the surname as “Belle.”

On 6 Feb 1874,Richard Bell, 68 yr, 2 mo, 3 da, birthplace unknown, died in Madison Twp. Guernsey Co., OH, of unknown causes. He was a farmer, residing in Guernsey Co.
