Col. Bishop passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at his residence. He was born on April 22, 1926 in Alexander City, Alabama to Isaiah Washington "I.W." Bishop and Bernice Carlton Bishop. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and farmer and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Col. Bishop graduated from Alexander City High School and later from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture. He served in the United States Army from 1942 until his retirement in 1978. He served as the Group Commander of the 20th Special Forces of the Alabama Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dorothy Scott Bishop of Alexander City; step-daughter, Kathi Duke (Jerry) of Equality; grandchildren, Dana Martin (Chad) of Atlanta, Darcy Melcher (Chris) of Atlanta, Michael Gregory Burt of Alexander City, and Adron Burt of Salem, AL.; great grandsons, Joshua Melcher, Caleb Melcher, and Evan Burt; brothers, Calvin Bishop (Lenna), of Houston and Ralph Bishop of Auburn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-son, Michael Scott Burt.
