On November 15, 1908 at 11 p.m. the long and useful life of Selina BURCH came to an end. Grandma BURCH, as friends usually called her, was a grand woman. Her influence was always for good. Her sterling qualities of womanhood sustained by steadfast faith in God and the power of the gospel to save, made her character one of strong Christian qualities. She was born June 5, 1827 in Kentucky. Her parents were Henry and Mary Elizabeth WOODY.

She became a charter member of the Union Baptist church in Monroe County, Indiana at the age of nineteen years. Later she removed her membership to the Baptist church in Stanford, Indiana. On December 28, 1840 she was married to Hiram Philip BURCH, who died near Stanford, Indiana June 27, 1887. To this union were born twelve children, five boys and seven girls, Sarah Jane CRANE, deceased; Nancy Annie PIERSON, of Princeton, Idaho; James Marion BURCH, deceased; Mary Elizabeth THOMAS deceased; Margaret Matilda WHITSITT, Paragon, Ind.; John Henry BURCH, Spokane, Washington; Joseph Wesley BURCH, Stewartsdale, N.D.; Rachel Mahala SHAVER, Mayfield, Kansas; Hiram Thomas BURCH, Bedford, Ind., and Effie Della FOWLER, Harrodsburg, Ind.

Nine children, about sixty-five grandchildren and elven great-grand children survive her. Since the death of her husband she lived among her children. The last eleven years of her life were spent with her daughter, Matilda WHITSITT, at Paragon, Ind., where she united with the Christian Church and lived a faithful member until her death. Eighty-one years, five months and ten days is a long time to live in this sinful world and one who can patiently bear the banner of Christ is certainly a remarkable person. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. J. NEAL at Stanford, Ind., Tuesday at 1 o’clock. Interment in the BURCH cemetery two miles south of Stanford, Ind.
