Death Yesterday of Joe M. Mayes at Belton

   Resulting from a recent attack of paralysis, the death of Joe M. Mayes occurred yesterday morning at six o'clock at the late residence in East Belton.

   Funeral arrangements are as yet incomplete, pending the arrival from Kentucky of a daughter of the decedent.  Interment will occur in the North Belton cemetery.

   Mr. Mayes was about sixty years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. Tom Mayes and Mrs. Charles DeMore both of Temple, are respectively his brother and sister.

   He was a native of Kentucky, moving to Belton in 1872.  After a three years residence there he located in Johnson county.  After residing there a few years, he returned to Belton, which place has been his home subsequently up to the time of his demise.

   He enjoyed a wide and favorable acquaintance in the county.  For a number of years, he was deputy city marshal at Belton, and later occupied the position of night watchman.

"In the death of Mr. Joe Mayes which occurred last Wednesday night, was the occasion of much regret over the city. Wednesday about noon he was stricken with paralysis, from which he did not recover, and died the early part of the night.


Mr. Mayes was at the time of his death night watchman, and at one time city marshal here. He was an honored member of the Belton fire department, which attended the funeral in a body.


The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. M. Williams of the Christian church. Burial in North Belton cemetery on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock.


The Democrat extends its sympathy to the bereaved family."
