Dave Mason was accused of killing his wife Mary Stevenson, whom he married on December 6, 1835 with James Bradshaw as the bondsman and S. Fitzgerald as the witness.

Declared guilty, he was then hung, the first resident of Haywood County to be executed in that way. Many years later, a former female resident of Crabtree, who had moved to Cocke County, Tennessee, confessed to the murder when she was on her deathbed. It is believed she had been a jealous lover.
