Elkins, W. Va. John Mathew "Dayton" Burgess, 83, husband of Reta Payne Burgess, died at 7:30 a.m. this morning at his home in Elkins, Route 2.

He was born June 30, 1882 at Marlinton, a son of David and Mary Burgess.

One step-son and one step-daughter survive, James Phares of Gerard, Ohio and Vina Phares , at home.

There are also several nieces and nephews.
