Charles Robert McKell, age 94, died peacefully Saturday December 2, 2000, in American Fork.
He was born July 6, 1906 in Spanish Fork, UT to David A. and Sarah Ann Wood Mc-Kell. He was the youngest of three sons. His brothers, Gerald (Mac), and Clifford have preced-ed him in death. Charles received his early education in Spanish Fork and graduated from BYU in 1931, and from the U of U in both 1948 and 1961 with Masters Degrees in Social Work. He was the first Psychiatric Social Worker in the State of Utah, and retired in 1971 after 35 years from the Utah State Hospital as Chief Social Worker. He also spent two years in the Navy during World War II.
He married Mary Madelyn Butler in 1932. The were divorced in 1963. He married Lorena House in 1964 both wives have preceded him in death.
Charles enjoyed writing poetry, wood carving, and making macrame chairs, and shared his talents with many. Since he was 90 years old, he has carved a set of entwined hearts for each of his grandchildren's weddings. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time there with his family. American Fork Canyon was a favorite spot in his later years. Charles was an active member of the LDS Church, and served as a high priest. He said that enduring to the end was the hard part of life, but he leaves a legacy of love and service to others.
He is survived by all of his children: Ruth (Rolland) Rose, Bellevue, WA; James R. (Marie) Ukiah, CA; Glen C. (Donna) Tooele, UT; D. Mac (Michelle), American Fork, UT; Gary A. (Eileen), LaVerkin, UT; Donna (Jim) Tanner, West Valley City, UT; Betty (Bob) Storer, Sun Lakes, AZ; 34 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wed Dec 6, 2000, 11 a.m. in the Anderson & Sons Mortuary Chapel (49 E. 100 N, American Fork) where friends may call Tues 6-8 p.m. and Wed one hour prior to the services. Internment, Spanish Fork Cemetery.
The family would like to thank VistaCare, especially Peggy & Pat, for their loving and tender care of Charles. Charles suggested that instead of flowers, that you take your family to Tony Roma's for Ribs!
