James Richard "Rip" Smith

James Richard "Rip" Smith, 62, of Robbinsville, formerly of Andrews, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in a Robbinsville care facility.

A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of William "Bill" Smith of Warner Robins, Ga. and the late Ethel Mae Magness Smith. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Air Force and was an automotive mechanic by trade. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Robbinsville. He was active in Cherokee County as a football referee and was a former president of the Graham County Youth Athletic Association. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Smith, who died in 1990; and an aunt, Mrs. Elmer Wheeler, who died in 2000.

Surviving in addition to his father, are his wife, Becky Smith of Robbinsville; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Nathan Cline of Dalton, Ga., and Teresa and Dennis Davis of Rolls, Mo.; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Doug and Brenda-Smith of Murphy, and J.W. and Josh Culbreth both of Graham County; two sisters, Ebie Hardin of Palm Beach, Fla. and Billie Smith of Warner Robins, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 27, in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, with the Rev. Roy Phillips officiating.

Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, was in charge of all arrangements.
