VANNIE E MONSON
Vannie Elmo Monson, 50 years old highly esteemed Bracken County jailer, passed away last Wednesday, Feb 17, at 4 pm at St Elizabeth's Hospital in Covington. He had entered the hospital the previous Sunday night suffering with a kidney ailment. Death was attributed to this cause.
Mr Monson, life long Bracken County resident, had been in ill health for six years, but had been able to continue his duties as jailer in Brooksville, with the assistance of his son Keevil.
An extremely popular office holder, he held the respect and admiration of all with whom he came in contact. He was especially noted for his cheerful disposition and jovial manner.
Mr Monson was serving his second term as jailer and prior to his election he was employed with the State Highway Department for 20 years.
He was a member of the Powersville Baptist church and was a third degree Mason.
Born December 9, 1903, in the Powersville neighborhood in Bracken county, he was the son of the late James and Rebecca Fields Monson.
Surviving besides his widow Mrs Anna Hazel Clark Monson, are seven children:
Mrs J D White of Alexandria, Mrs Julian Martin of Robertson Co, Donald Monson, serving with the Air Force in Georgia, Vannie Monson of Brooksville, Keevil Monson and Judy Monson of the home, and Pfc Ralph Monson, Korea. He also leaves a half-brother, Jimmie Lucas of Berlin.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at the Powersville Baptist Church, the Rev R E McNamara, pastor, officiating.
Burial followed at the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Brooksville. McCarty, Metcalfe and Poage funeral directors were in charge of arrangements.
