Elizabeth Van Vechten Smith Hardie
The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Van Vechten Smith, 79, widow of James W. Hardie, late of Montgomery, Ala., took place at the residence of John H Sanderson, Main street, Monday. Mrs. Hardie was the daughter of General Walter Smith of Mobile, Ala, a soldier in the war of 1812, an officer in the regular army. She was twice married, her first husband being Rush Jones of Montgomery, Ala., following whose death she married James W. Hardie of the same place. Having been the daughter, sister and wife of soldiers in active service in her young womanhood, Mrs. Hardie realized the anxieties and heartache now to many thousands of American women. She was a woman of the southern type, with a gracious personality and her life had been one well worth living
Mrs. Hardie is survived by her twin sister, Mrs. John S. Sanderson, three grandchildren, Horatio S. du Mont, and Mrs. Philip Rogers of this town and William Bertrum du Mont in the Navy reserve service, two great grandchildren, William Washburn du Mont and George E. Rogers, Jr., a niece, Mrs. Julius LeBasse of Bogalusa, La., a nephew, Walter B. Smith of Lake Charles, La., and several grand nephews and nieces, and three great grand nieces, daughters of Allen Spooner of Lake Charles, La.
Funeral services were held at the Sanderson home Wednesday afternoon, Rev. A. P. Pratt of the Second Congregational Church officiating and burial was in Green River cemetery.
