Mike Cabiness was a member of the famed 'Tuskegee Airmen' in WWII. He was the first Gaston-area black to earn a pilot's license in the late 1930s. He volunteered for the 99th Pursuit Squadron when the first all-black squadron formed in 1941. He became a 1st Lt., but an air crash during training grounded him. He shipped overseas and served as ground crew with the squadron.

He married Margaret Washington, a granddaughter of Booker T. Washington, founder of the Tuskegee Institute. He earned a Master's Degree at Wharton School of Business in 1960. He worked in Gastonia after 1976 with the Gaston Schools and the Office of Aging.
