Commander Irl Jacob George, 79, of Carbondale, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Irl was born July 7, 1934 in Colony, KS, the son of Russell and Marjorie Compton George.

He was retired from the U.S. Navy and from USD 450, having served as both a teacher and administrator. He was proud of his years of Naval Service and loved the years he spent in education. Irl was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially loved duck hunting with his brother, Jim. He was also a competitive game player.

Irl was preceded in death by his children, Lucinda Mari Burnett and Richard Irl George. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Leota Kruger George and the loves of his life, Cody and Melinda George Recob, great-grandchildren, Claire, Brittney and Jacob Recob all of Scranton, his sister, Shirley Tidd of Fort Collins, CO and his brother, Jim (Janice) George of Hartford, KS.

Our family would like to thank Irl's caregivers at Brookside Retirement Center and Grace Hospice for the care he received. Thanks also to our family and friends for your prayers, cards, visits and words of comfort and encouragement. You all helped to make these last weeks the best they could be.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Inurnment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., Ste. 100, Topeka, KS 66614 or the Overbrook United Methodist Church, 1005 N. Maple St., Overbrook, KS 66524.
