Aaron Alvin (Buddy) Smeltzer, age 82, of Texarkana, Arkansas, died on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at UAMS in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mr. Smeltzer was born on November 1, 1931 in Taylor, Arkansas to the predeceased William Russell Smeltzer (December 20, 1901 – February 6, 1974) and Martha Lorene (Lynn) Smeltzer (January 29, 1905 – March 25, 1990). He attended school at Walker's Creek and Bradley, Arkansas, finishing up and receiving his diploma in the United States Navy. Mr. Smeltzer accepted Christ as his Saviour at age twelve, at the Old Burton Saw Mill. Mr. Smeltzer was a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. After coming home from the Navy, he married his sweetheart, Irene Higgs on February 20, 1953, at Calvary Baptist Church in Texarkana. Mr. Smeltzer was a faithful member of the Highland Hills Baptist Church in Texarkana since 1961. There he served as a Deacon, lay-preacher, Sunday School teacher and directed the music and choir for fourteen years. Mr. and Mrs. Smeltzer sang duets together at church and were asked to perform for many special services, weddings and funerals. Mr. Smeltzer spent many Sunday afternoons preaching the Gospel to residents of Evergreen, which is now Linrock Nursing Center. He and Mrs. Smeltzer were members of the Woodmen of the World Fraternal organization, and he was a Gideon.

Mr. Smeltzer was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed these hobbies with his son, Paul and many close friends. He was well-known with is close friends and relatives for his wonderful squirrel mulligan stew. In 1958, Mr. Smeltzer opened up and operated "Buddy Smeltzer's Garage" in Texarkana, Arkansas. He was well known as a great mechanic who practiced Christian principles on and off the job. He lived each day on purpose, with a purpose. Mr. Smeltzer was preceded in death by his wife, Ona Irene Smeltzer, a brother, William Russell Smeltzer, Jr., and a sister, Gene Burke.

Mr. Smeltzer is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Mike Lee of Texarkana, TX, Drs. Deborah and David Holder of Sulphur, LA, Rita and Chuck Sawyer of Mukilteo, WA, and a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kayla Smeltzer of Genoa, AR; nine grandchildren: Erica Deaton, Jacob Tefteller, Jill Tefteller Burton, Samuel Holder, Clifton Smeltzer, Kelli Clark, Katrina Brown, Caleb Holder and Shawn Sawyer, and twelve great-grandchildren. Also survived by three of his sisters and brother-in-law, Faye Allen of Mission, TX, Frances Harbison of Temple, TX and Sue and Burl Ball of Alvin, TX, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and in-laws.

Mr. Smeltzer was also preceded in death by a brother, William Russell Smeltzer, Jr., and a sister, Gene Burke.

A celebration of his life will be at 10:00 A. M. Saturday at the Texarkana Funeral Home Arkansas Chapel with Dr. David Holder, Rev. James Lindsey, and Rev. Chip Anthony officiating. Burial will be at East Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 PM until 8 PM Friday.
