“Tommy Ryan” Dies at Monett After Putting on Weight Exhibition

Monett, May 1 – (AP) – Two hours after he had given one of his light weight-lifting exhibitions before high school students to support his contention that a physically fit man should neither drink nor smoke, Joseph Juvenal, who gave his age as 85, collapsed and died of a heart attack at a hotel here yesterday.

Juvenal, who called himself “Tommy Ryan” and had been giving the demonstrations for more than a decade, clutched at his chest, students noted, after he had lifted a weight marked 200 pounds, asserting “Nobody who smokes cigarettes can do it.” David Martin, 17, also suffered a slight cut when he held a potato in the palm of his hand for Juvenal to slice with a sword to demonstrate his steady nerves.

Several weeks ago, Juvenal gave his demonstrations of weight-lifting at Central High School here, and also spoke before one of the service clubs. He also appeared in several other towns in the district.

Persons here remember that Juvenal, who always used the name “Tommy Ryan,” appeared at Jackson 12 years ago. He claimed that he had formerly held the middleweight boxing championship of the world, but boxing experts contended that no records could be found to prove that he had ever boxed professionally.
