Mellie Eliza Caster Saidla, 96, of Crawfordsville, died Friday in the Houston Health Care Center.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, was active in the Home Economic Club, a 50-year member of Dorothy Q Chapter DAR, and held many offices in the Daughters of the Union Veterans.
She was born March 8, 1889, the daughter of pioneer parents Emma Lenora Shaver and Abraham Beck Caster. Her father fought in the Civil War. She attended Flat Creek School near Shannondale and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1909.
On Oct. 4, 1916, she was married to Glen E. Saidla. In 1923, they bought and moved into the Liter homestead southwest of Crawfordsville on John Bell Road.
After his death on March 2, 1961, Mrs. Saidla had the 4-H sheep barn constructed and presented to the organization in the honor of Mr. Saidla, who had always encouraged boys and girls to participate in the 4-H program. She also was preceded in death by a sister and brother. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in the Hunt and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Wallace McDonald officiating. Entombment will be in the Oak Hill Mausoleum. Friends may call 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
