My Dad's (Herb) Cousin "Thomas"
Sworn Brothers ⟡ Since Childhood

His Mother Winifred Simpson Gordon
Sister of My Grandfather Henry Simpson

♥ Wedding Anniversary July 16, 1966 ♥

He was born on Independence Day and grew up in Hope, Arkansas. The 3rd of 5 children. As kids they loved walking the railroad tracks to their favorite swimming hole. His little brother Simpson was age 9 and drowned there.

Three young boys in a town called hope. Thomas (James "Thomas" Gordon), my Dad (Herb Simpson) and Dale Simpson. They were cousins and dubbed themselves the 3 Muskateers forever. These boys looked like 3 peas in a pod, along with their voices sounding the same. They were the finest of gentlemen.

I am forever grateful to Thomas, my Dad and Dale for putting together our family genealogy book ♥

Our heart's are heavy with tears.

We just lost Dale April 21, 2017
He was our last paternal elder Age 94
Thomas was our 2nd to last paternal elder 2013 Age 90

Thomas was employed by Van De Kamp Bakery, then at Sages Bakery until joining General Mills in 1969 where he remained until retirement in 1987 in California. For about a year he was sent to Seattle, Washington to work for Van de Kamp Bakery which was wonderful. His close cousin Herb from childhood in Hope, Arkansas was living nearby in Washington.

Thomas was a little more on the reserved side. His cousin Herb was an easy going type. When they were young guys, Herb would get Thomas a nice girl for a blind date and then they would double date. Thomas never found a spark with any girl no matter what, it just didn't happen. That's because the true love of his life was yet to happen.

Her name was Shirley. Shirley Bahnemann stole his heart ❤ She was a widow with 3 boys. They were married on July 16, 1966. They never had children of their own together. Thomas dearly loved Shirley and raised and loved the boys as his own. He was endearing with a sense of humor that was never the hurting kind. A devoted family man. Loved and adored by all who knew him.

He was a member for 65 years of the Glendale Elk's Club #1289, and a lifetime member (since 1956) of the American Institute of Baking. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Riverside, CA for 47 years and became a member in 1984. He served there as Church Council Secretary and President and was a devout member until his death. A memorial service was held on Sunday, 11/17/13, at 10:45 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5969 Brockton Ave., Riverside, CA 92506. Your prayers are welcomed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent anytime to Trinity Lutheran Church for the James Thomas Gordon Memorial Fund.

At the time of his passing he left behind to love and cherish his memory his wife Shirley of 47 years (now deceased), his stepson and his family. His predeceased stepson Jon D. Johnson's wife and his family. He has five great grandchildren. His older sister Beatrice Gordon Hicks (now deceased). 4 nieces and 2 nephews. He is dearly and greatly Loved and will be Missed by his family and many special friends ❤
