Samuel married Priscilla Coffee (b.1828 PA) on 2 Feb 1836 in Marion Co., Ohio. I found five, and perhaps six, children for them. Daughter Mary Jane was born in November of 1840 while they were still in Ohio. Son Samuel C. followed in 1843.

Sometime before the summer of 1848, the family left Ohio and moved to Indiana. A daughter named Sarah Alice died there on 12 Jun 1848, her age unknown. They welcomed daughter Amanda in 1849. I found Samuel, aged 52, and Priscilla, aged 32, living in Plymouth (mistakenly noted as My Division), Marshall Co., Indiana, where Samuel was both a farmer and a saddler. With the couple were their three children--Jane, aged 10, Samuel Jr., aged 7, and Amanda, aged 1. Also living with the family was Stephen R. Coffee, aged 15. As he was born in Pennsylvania, it is more than likely he was related to Priscilla--younger brother? Nephew? Son from a previous marriage? Also there was 28-year-old G.F. Spalding.

The year 1853 was likely a mix of both sadness and joy.

On the sad end, Samuel died that year on February 20th at age 54. He and Priscilla's son James died four months later on June 16th at age two. Four months later, Priscilla found love again.

She remarried quickly, tying the knot with Benjamin Bentz (b.1828 OH) on 30 Oct 1853 in Marshall County. Benjamin was a blacksmith. It was also a second marriage for him. He had previously married Elizabeth Ann Elmaker on 30 Mar 1851 in Marion, Ohio. Elizabeth had also died earlier that year on 7 Jul 1853. The fact that both Priscilla and Benjamin's marriages had taken place in Marion, Ohio, suggests that the pair already knew each other, explaining why their nuptials took place only a few months after the death of their respective spouses.

A dark cloud reappeared a few years later when Samuel and Priscilla's 16-year-old daughter Mary Jane died on 20 Sep 1857.

Priscilla and Benjamin appeared together on the 1860 Census, living in Plymouth. With them were Priscilla and Samuel's children Samuel, aged 17, and Amanda, aged 11. There was a third child, a son named J. Ed, born circa 1853. He was using the Bentz surname, unlike Samuel and Amanda who were using the Patterson surname, so he was likely Benjamin's son, but with the dates so close, it is certainly possible he was Samuel's son.

Priscilla must have died sometime between 1860 and 1864, as Benjamin married for a third time in 1864 and appeared with third wife Eliza R. (nee Harris) on the 1870 Census.
