Niles G. Peterson, 89 years, of Fremont, NE died Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Arbor Manor in Fremont. Niles was born January 29, 1924 in Fremont, NE to Lawrence and Opal (Flisram) Peterson.
Niles grew up in Fremont and was a life long resident of Fremont. He was a 1941 graduate of Fremont High School. Niles served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 11/18/41 to 1/25/47, in Europe, Africa and the Asiatic Pacific. He graduated from the V-12 program at Montana School of Mines in Butte, MT. He married Geneva M. Phinney on October 28, 1944 in Fremont. Niles was employed at George A. Hormel & Company in Fremont as a maintenance mechanic until retiring in 1981.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Fremont and a life member of V.F.W. Post #854 of Fremont. He loved to fish, camp, garden and do woodworking.
Niles is survived by his wife, Geneva of Fremont; daughter, June and husband, Stephen Cardwell of Fontanelle, NE; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gordon Peterson; daughter, Karen Marquette; and 2 sisters, LaVon and Betty.
A graveside service was held Monday at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. The Rev. Gundar Lamberts of First Baptist Church officiated. Military honors were conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20. Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church in Fremont.
