School Board Secretary-Treasurer, D.C. Bayne, Dies; Rites Wednesday
Secretary-treasurer of the Calgary School Board for the past 18 years, and a prominent figure in Alberta curling and educational circles, David C. Bayne, aged 66 y ears, 3012 First street west, died in a local hospital last night at 10 o'clock following a lengthy illness.
Last month Mr. Bayne went to Rochester, Minn., for medical treatment and last Thursday was brought back to the city and entered hospital.
Born near Ottawa, Mr. Bayne came west in 1900 and settled at Banff, where he pursued his occupation as teacher. Later he was engaged in business with David White of Bankhead, near Banff, operating a general merchandise store.
In 1920 he was appointed secretary-treasurer of the public school board.
An outstanding figure in curling circles, he was considered a feature player, and several times won the Calgary bonspiel.
He is survived by his widow, one son, John W., Calgary, one daughter, Mrs. Helen Whittaker, Edmonton, and two brothers, J.M. Bayne, Regina, and D.M. Bayne, Kemptville, Ontario.
R.C. Carlile, member of the board of trustees of the Calgary School Board, said, "He was one of those fine gentlemen that Ontario so often produces. He was thoroughly efficient, and as secretary-treasurer of the school board served extraordinarily well as buffer between the board and the public in their demands for increased service in the schools and at the same time greater economy in operation.
