In the 1830s John Wooten's parents, Henry and Ann, moved from Fairfield County, South Carolina to Perry County, Alabama. About 1840 they relocated to Pickens County, Alabama, where their son John was born in June 1843. John grew up in Pickens County and, at age 19, joined the Confederate States Army where he served until the surrender.

Military: 5th Mississippi Cavalry, Co. K (1862-1865)

Marriage: 1873 to Martha Jane "Mattie"
