John Alexander Winn was the son of Abner Winn and Lucretia Posey, who are buried in the Old Northport Cemetery in Northport, Alabama. On 11 February 1819 in Jackson Co., Georgia, he married Laodicea Ann ("Dicy"), daughter of James Horton and Elizabeth Carrington. In the early 1850s, John and his family (including daughter Elizabeth Ann Braselton, who had been widowed), moved to Tuscaloosa Co. from Jackson Co., Georgia.

John A. Winn's obituary in Obit. is in Tuscaloosa Times, Wed., 26 Aug. 1874 (3:5) reads: "Died: Wynn--In Tuscaloosa county, on the 3 inst., John A. Wynn, Esq., in the 79th year of his age." Note that the day of death here conflicts with that in the family bible as well as on the tombstone.

John A. Winn's obituary in the Methodist newspaper Southern Christian Advocate, 7 Oct. 1874, states, "Mr. John A. Winn was born in Abbeville district, S. C., December 24, 1795.
