In 1810 Franklin County, Tennessee, James was one of five elders of the newly formed Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Some members of the Goshen Presbyterian Church had broken away to form the new church. Rev. Robert Bell was the first pastor. The five who were elected as the elders were: William Alexander, Abraham Shook, John Cowan, James McCord and Benjamin Weir.

In 1821, James and family moved to Lawrence County, Alabama where wife, Dorcas died 27 years later. James moved to Mississippi with his son, Campbell Washington McCord. He and daughter, Cynthia are on the 1860 Census living in Tishomingo County. Parts of Tishomingo and Tippah County were taken to form Alcorn County April 15, 1870. He may have died in what is now Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi.
