James was born in Lewis County, Kentucky to Basil Augustus Waring (Memorial# 28974312) and Sarah L. Thompson (Memorial# 28974437) - their only son of five children. James came to Illinois with his family in the spring of 1835 at about age 10. James and Martha had six children: Eliza, b. about 1848; Sarah Annetta, b. December, 1850; Johny, b. June 3, 1856; Mary H, b. December 20, 1858; James Henry, b. August 14, 1860; and Andrew Smith, b. June 13, 1865. Only Sarah Annetta lived to adulthood and had children.
According to the 1923 obituary of my Great Grandmother Sarah Francis (Bagby) Moore, her uncle was known widely as "Uncle Jimmy."

"Waring, James, farmer, Sec. 15; P.O. La Prairie: was born in Lewis county, KY., Aug 20, 1825; came to this county in the spring of 1835; has 167 acres of land, valued at $7,000; married Martha Robbins. She was born in Guilford county, N.C., in 1829. They have had six children, Eliza, Nettie, Johnny, Mary, Andrew S. and James H.; only one is living. Mr. and Mrs. Waring belong to the M. E. church. His father emigrated from Maryland to Kentucky when he was five years old, and lived there thirty-three years, where he raised a family of six children; then in 1835 came to this county, where he lived until he died, at the age of seventy-five years. He was in the War of 1812. When he came here, moved into a shanty, 12x14 feet, on the land where Alason Tarr now lives; used a store box for a table, for a number of years. Mr. Waring is one of the pioneers of the county."
