Following high school, he entered the College of William and Mary; in February 1943 during World War II, he reported for duty and served for more than three years. He attained the rank of captain and his last assignment was regimental adjutant of the 33rd Infantry in the Panama Canal Zone.
He returned to William and Mary, graduating in 1948, and enrolled at the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating in 1950. He practiced law in Washington, D.C.; moved to Harrisonburg in 1951, where he practiced law until 1959. Thereafter, he was engaged in real estate, as a Realtor, until his retirement in 1983.
On December 27, 1948, he married the former Elizabeth Ann Mylander of Washington, D.C., who survives.
He is also survived by four children, Susan B. Gutshall and her husband, Allen, of Mount Sidney, Va., James G. Bowman Jr. and his wife, Rhonda, of Barboursville, Va., William F. Bowman and his wife, Debra, of Leesburg, Va., and Col. Thomas M. Bowman and his wife, Moon Ju, of Hawaii, a retired veteran of the Vietnam War, and the surviving twin son of a previous marriage during World War II. The other twin son, John E. Bowman, died in 1999. He is survived by 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three nephews and three nieces.
He was predeceased by a brother, Pasco M. Bowman Sr.; and sisters, Catherine E. Myers, Leona V. Carpenter and Anna L. Stoneburner; and granddaughter, Crystal Bowman.
He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a present or past member of a number of professional, fraternal, veteran and civic organizations.
His body will be cremated at Lindsey Cremation Chapel and a private graveside service will be held at Timberville Cemetery.
