Chester Harold "Pete" Moore, 94, of Vienna, W.Va., formerly of Sandyville, W.Va., passed away on Jan. 7, 2014, at The Willows Center in Parkersburg.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1920, and lived in the Medina/Lockhart area of Jackson County. He was the son of the late Kerman Lonzo Moore and Susan Mabel Keeser Moore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Beymer Moore; son, Frank Joseph Moore; brothers, Clarence Moore and Lloyd Moore; and sisters, Gladys Allman and Nina Moore.
He retired from E. I. DuPont Washington Works in Washington, W.Va., in January 1978, after 27 years of service, where he was known as "Chet". He and his wife owned and operated Moore's Keystone and Pure Oil at Lockhart, W.Va., from 1948 to 1963. He was a member and past superintendent of Lockhart United Methodist Church.
He married Marguerite Beymer on Aug. 30, 1941. They were married 60 years until her death in October, 2001. He enjoyed gardening, cutting brush and weed eating on the farm at Lockhart. Later in life, he also enjoyed traveling with his wife, and he always enjoyed his family and friends. Chester was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Navy, 99th Construction Battalion (U.S. Navy Seabees) from 1943-1945. His battalion also made the movie "The Fighting Seabees" starring John Wayne and Susan Hayward. He attained the ranks of apprentice, seaman, seaman III, seaman II, seaman I and carpenter III. He served in Oahu, Hawaii, and the Island of Samar, Philippines. He was a disabled American veteran, a lifetime member of VFW Post #3488 in Sandyville, and a member of American Legion Post #107 in Ripley.
Surviving are his daughter, Christine E. Rasel (Greg Carter), Parkersburg; daughter-in-law, Rosetta Hess Moore, Sandyville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Gregory Moore, Showshoe, W.Va., Treva (Gary) Richards, David (Lori) Moore and Brenda (Darrell) Moore-Withrow, all of Sandyville, W.Va.; great-grandchildren, Trevor Moore, Elkins, W.Va., Toby Moore, Taylor Moore and David Moore, Jr., all of Sandyville, W.Va., and Logan Moore of Warner Robbins, Ga.; sister, Virginia Allman, Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m., at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, W.Va. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens in Parkersburg. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 9, from 6-8 p.m.
