Pioneer City Hotelman Dies
Frederick Charles Adams, 81, of 412 5th Ave. W., one of the west's earliest hotelmen, died Saturday in the General hospital.
Mr. Adams was born in London, England and came to Beaverton, Ont., with his parents when he was two years old. He began his hotel career as a bellboy in Ontario.
Coming to Field, B.C., with George Perley, another pioneer hotelman, in 1882, Mr. Adams operated the C.P.R. hotels in Field and Revelstoke until 1885 when he came to Calgary.
Owned Old "Alberta"
He purchased the Alberta hotel in 1890 and ran it in partnership with Thomas Peers until 1900. They then operated the Victoria hotel for 10 years, selling out in 1910. Mr. Adams bought the Alexandra hotel and went into business for himself. He retired in 1917.
Mr. Adams was active in all sports and took a great interest in curling, hockey and lacrosse.
He was a member of Alberta Lodge No. 1, I.O.O.F. for 52 years and a member of the Veteran Odd Fellows' Association of Southern Alberta for 26 years.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Eleanor; three sons, Clinton, Winnipeg; Stewart, Calgary; Lt.Col. Frederick D. Adams, D.S.O., Camp Borden, Ont. Three sisters, Mrs. Charles Traunweiser and Mrs. Fred Boyd, both of Victoria; and Mrs. Emma Collier, Ellensburg, Wash. One brother, Edward, Cleveland, Ohio, and three grandchildren.
