During World War II, Don worked in the Denver Arms Plant. He attempted to join the military several times but a physical condition prevented him from serving. Shortly after the birth of their second son, Don and Mary Alice decided to join family in California. In 1944 they drove a Model T Ford across the plains to Richmond, CA where they made their home. Upon completion of his real estate license, Don obtained his first position as a salesman working for Reuben Janz, a broker. He was successful in Real Estate for the next 40 yrs. He and Mary Alice established an office of their own on 23rd St. in Richmond. They later contracted to have their own office built on MacDonald Avenue. He served two terms as Mayor of Richmond in the 1960s. His interest continued and he ran for State Assembly in his district in West Contra Costa County. During his time in office as Mayor of Richmond he helped to establish the zoning and contracts for the Hilltop Mall and worked closely with the Port Authority of the City of Richmond to develop that entity.

Don participated in many service organizations; they include the Lions Club, Rotary, Moose, Elk, Eastern Star and various others. His membership in Harbor Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Masons existed fifty Years. He was very proud to be a 32nd Degree Scottish Right Mason.
