Funeral services for Tom Rayburn, 72-year-old brother of Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Wise Funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jack Carson, pastor of the First Baptist church, and the Rev. Don White, pastor of the First Christian church, officiating.
Burial was in Willow Wild cemetery under direction of Wise Funeral home. Pallbearers were Oscar Lowry, J. H. Henson, Frank Doss, Robert West, Morris Lightfoot and Charles Langford.
The long-time farmer and live-stockman, whose home was a short distance west of the Rayburn family home west of Bonham, died Tuesday night in Baylor hospital, Dallas, following an extended illness that had necessitated a series of four major operations in recent months.
Speaker Rayburn had been at his brother's bedside almost constantly for the last two weeks, returning from Washington when Mr. Tom's condition continued to grow steadily worse.
Born in Roane county, Tennessee, Mr. Tom was the 10th of 11 children of Mr. and Mrs. William Marion Rayburn. The family moved to Texas when he was still a baby, settling in the Flag Springs community south of Windom where he grew to manhood.
In the early 40s and after the family had moved to the home west of Bonham, he was married to Loyce DeBerry of Whitewright and they moved into the home where they have lived continuously since.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Loyce Rayburn; two brothers, Speaker Rayburn of Bonham and Dick Rayburn of Ector; two sisters, Mrs. S. E. Bartley of Bonham, and Mrs. W. A. Thomas of Dallas, and a number of nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Joyce Lightfoot of Bonham.
