H/O Jane ; father of Rosamena & Clara
Jonas Barrett emigrated alone to America when he was 15 years old and his wife was brought to this country when she was 2 years old.

On Sept. 25, 1861 Jonas enrolled in the Army at Yonkers, N.Y. as a musician in the 17th, New York vol. Inf. He was discharged at Harrison's Landing on Aug. 11, 1862. He was in battles in Virginia and around the Potomac. His occupation was listed as a shoemaker before his service.

He and family came to Topeka in 1870. He established a shoe store in Topeka (where the Crosby store is now) on Kansas Ave. This business was unable to withstand the 1874 "grasshopper years". He then went to Eskridge & homesteaded on a farm in Wabunsee Co. He in later years set up a shop in Eskridge where he made boots, shoes & saddles.

For many years he was a member of Marshalls band playing a cornet in the band. He also was a band teacher & gave instructions to Jackson Twenty-third Regimental Band immediately after it was organized. While he lived in Eskridge he had the Eskridge Band. Jacksons Band was organized May 6, 1890 by a black man who had played minstrel shows. The band attached themselves to the military during the Spanish-American War as Regimental Band for the all-black Twenty-Third Kansas Volunteers. The band competed for 40 years with Topeka's best. Marshalls band was compared to John Phillip Sousas Band and played all over the country and is still playing today a 100 years later.

He was always prominent in the G.A.R. affairs and was past commander of the Eskridge post.

He was a Mason for many years & for a number of years had been a member of the Topeka Lodge No. 17, A.F.&A.M. Besides being a past master of the Eskridge Masonic Lodge, he was a past Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows and a past worthy Patron of the Eastern Star organization of Eskridge.

He stated on pension papers of 1891 that since leaving service he had been a machinist, farmer, merchant and shoemaker. He had lived in the states of Conn., New York, New Jersey, & Kansas.
