Grant was the youngest of five children born to early Iowa settlers William Henderson Messenger and his 2nd wife, Laura Abigail Thayer.

His siblings: Norton Henry, Sarah Adah, Eddie Forest (d.y.) and Alice Elizabeth. His half-siblings: Eliza, George Washington, James John, Grove (d.y.), Nicholas Clare and William Wallace.

On March 12, 1890, Grant married Myrtle Thurman, d/o Bluford F. Thurman and Susan Waddell, at Muscatine, Iowa. They had two children. A son, Fay Thurman; and a daughter, Hazel, born in 1892 who died in 1898.

The family lived in Muscatine and Lime Creek township until sometime between 1905 and 1910 when Grant moved them to Pueblo, Colorado where he and Myrtle lived the rest of their lives.
