ReaDell Evans Ashley passed away on January 1, 2014 at the age of ninety-six.
RaeDell was born July 24, 1917 to Charles Ray Evans and Bardella Beal, the eldest of three sisters, in Salt Lake City, Utah. RaeDell was a pioneer in spirit and in deed throughout her life and loved by those that touched her life.
RaeDell attended the University of Utah and participated in many of the performing arts. She then transferred to Idaho State University to complete her Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. RaeDell was the first woman to receive a pharmacy degree from Idaho State University.
RaeDell owned three pharmacies in the Salt Lake area during her early years in clinical pharmacy. RaeDell was the first woman in the nation to preside over a State Pharmaceutical Association. RaeDell was very active in the establishment of national programs, including Medicare and Medicaid.
RaeDell was actively involved in making sure those with AIDS received the medications they needed to live. Eventually, RaeDell was asked by the State Health Department to head up the Medicaid Pharmacy Program for Utah, where she worked until her retirement from public service at the age of ninety-one.
As part of her service to the State of Utah, she was responsible for saving many tens of millions of dollars through her innovative drug rebate program. RaeDell's distinguished career was certainly marked by the pioneer spirit.
RaeDell is survived by her two children, Gordon Kearl Ashley II and Allyson Ashley, as well as her sister, Marjorie Gardner, and several nieces and nephews. RaeDell was preceded in death by her husband, John Whittaker, her sister, Valeen Rich, and her parents.
The memorial service celebrating RaeDell's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City. A viewing at 10:00 a.m. will precede the services.
Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East), East Millcreek, following the services.
