Carl "Charley" Erick Robert Erickson was born October 17, 1851 in Stockholm, Sweden. His childhood in Sweden was difficult. Times were hard, and they were poor. Much of the time, he was hungry. As a young man, he worked as a farmhand, moving from place to place. His right arm was noticeably shorter than his left, because he was gored by a bull when he was young, but it was a strong arm and helped to make him an expert at hewing logs with a broad ax. In 1881, he emigrated via Bremen Haven, Germany on the vessel Malba. He arrived at the port of Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1881. He sent money back to Sweden for Hilda Caroline Börgesson and they were married on June 19, 1883 at the Moravian church in Ephraim, Door County, Wisconsin. Hilda was born in Osterjotland, Sweden on September 19, 1857. Their first home was a log cabin with two rooms and a loft attached to the barn. Hilda died on New Year's Day, 1915 of a burst appendix, causing peritonitis. She had been ill for about four days. Northern Door County was in the midst of a winter blizzard and it was impossible to get medical aid. After she died, Charley went out to Phoenix, Arizona with his son, Hugo and his family. He later moved back to Wisconsin. In 1931, he moved from his small shack at Uncle's Point to his son's house on Bay Shore Drive in Sister Bay. In the April of 1935, Charley had been ailing and his brother Gus came from California to see him. Shortly after, Charley was taken to the hospital in Sturgeon Bay and died there April 29, 1935. He is buried beside Hilda at Little Sisters Cemetery, Sister Bay, Wisconsin.
