Mother: Ethel L Banks
Haywood Funeral Home Obit
Winifred "Winnie" Calonia Harris, 87, formerly of 2900 Woods Place Raleigh, NC was born the seventh and last child to Theodore and Ethel Banks Harris, on August 28, 1924. She entered into rest on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Raleigh Rehabilitation Center.
A lifelong resident of the Method Community, Winnie received her formal education at Berry O'Kelly Training School. She then attended and graduated from DeShazor's Beauty School on Raleigh, NC. After a short stint as a cosmetologist, Winnie chose a different career path. She began employment with Meredith College in 1948 and retired in 1992 as dining room supervisor.
Winnie joined St. James AME Church at an early age. She was a faithful member in both the senior and gospel choirs. She also served as a strong class leader for many years. She was known as the "candy lady" by the youth growing up in her church. She made sure she had her 'stash' ready for distibution on Sunday mornings. During her extended illness, Winnie continued to fellowship with her church family, never wavering in her service and love for God. She was always confident that the Lord would take care of her through the good and the bad.
Winnie will forever be loved by family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory; one sister, Elsie Harris Nunn of Apex, NC; two nieces, Ethel LaVerne Patterson and Deborah (Linwood) Lofton both of Durham, NC; four nephews, Maurice Nunn of Simpsonville, SC, Theodore Harris of Newark, NJ, Godfrey Harris of Newport News, VA, and Leonard (Dorothea) Harrell of St. Pauls, NC; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
