Former Head of Continental Succumbs in Laramie After Short Illness

Sidney H. Keoughan, 59, former president of the Continental Oil company [now Conoco] and well known Colorado and Wyoming oil man, died Wednesday night in a hospital at Laramie, Wyo.

He had been suffering from an intestinal ailment and went to a ranch near Walden, Colo., two weeks ago to rest. He became critically ill Wednesday and was rushed to the Laramie hospital.

Mr. Keoughan was born at Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada, Nov. 10, 1880. He was educated at St. Vincent's school in Alabama and later was associated with shipping operations at Mobile, Ala., and Port Arthur, Tex.

He entered the oil well drilling business at Beaumont, Tex., and in 1901 brought in a Louisiana well which was said to be the first producer in that state. He also was credited with drilling the discovery well in the Byron, Wyo., field.

Through a series of mergers of oil companies with which he was associated he rose to the presidency of the Continental Oil Company. He held this position from 1925 to 1929 in Denver.

In 1930 Mr. Keoughan went to Germany as president of the North European Oil company. Later he returned to Casper, Wyo., and organized the Mutual Oil syndicate, operating in Colorado and Wyoming.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Olive Keoughan, residing in Denver, and a son, Sidney F. Keoughan of Chicago.
