Samuel was the son of Leonard & Martha (nee Portwood) Portwood. He married Susan Kidwell on January 13, 1881 in Madison County. The couple were the parents of Nora Lee and Elizabeth Alma Portwood. Mr. Portwood was widowed, in 1890, and did not remarry.
He provided for his daughters by farming his own land. After he retired from farming, he lived in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Norman & Lizzie Portwood Maupin. Mr. Portwood passed away from the effects of stomach cancer.
