Libertyville Independent dated Thursday, July 19, 1923

John Lawrence, one of the oldest residents of Libertyville, died at his home on north Milwaukee avenue, last Saturday morning, after a short illness. Mr. Lawrence was stricken with paralysis the first part of last week and his death had been expected for several days. John Lawrence was one of the best known men of this village, and he will be missed by many friends and acquaintances who honored and respected him.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30, at his late residence on North Milwaukee avenue, by the Rev. Charles J. Dickey, of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Interment at Lakeside. The following was read by Mr. Dickey:

In the death of John Lawrence, which occurred on Saturday, July 14, the community lost a widely known and highly respected citizen. He was born on the farm where he died, on Oct. 6, 1844, his parents being George Lawrence and Elizabeth Brook. His age was 78 years, 9 months and 8 days and of all that long life he spent less than six months away from Libertyville. No figure was more familiar on our streets, and none will be more greatly missed.

He was the third of a family of six children, the only survivor being Eliza Brand, a resident of California.

Mr. Lawrence was married twice – first to Lydia Davis, on March 20, 1881, who died about a year afterwards, leaving one child, Mrs. Lydia Greenfield, of Hinckley, Illinois. His second marriage was to Mary Loftus, in December, 1885. To this union was born two boys, George of Libertyville, and Guy, of Chicago. His second wife died in February, 1919. The three children and one grandchild, Helen Greenfield survive.

John Lawrence was so well and favorably known that but little need to be said in this presence about his character. He live* a long life. He lived honorably. He played the game on the square. He enjoyed life as he lived it and made many friends and no more enemies than an honest man makes. He had many virtues and no outstanding vices. He was a good citizen, a good father, a good neighbor and a good man. With you, his fellow citizens, he lived his life and in your keeping he leaves his sacred dust and the legacy y of a long life well spent.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.

*It does read “live” here and not “lived”.
