Wellington Leader August 9, 1979

Tom Salem, 69, a retired Turkey merchant, died in his sleep about 7:00 a.m. Friday, August 3.

A former Wellington resident, he came here in 1932 to work at The Hub, owned by a friend, Enis Schadid. He remained until 1938 when he moved to Turkey to establish Salem Dry Goods.

Later, stores were also established in Matador, Silverton and Paducah, which he operated many years. He had sold them to former associates and turned the Turkey store over to his son, Tim Salem, although he continued to work there.

Mr. Salem was born June 16, 1910 in Kafaracah, Mt. Lebanon, Syria, and reached the United States with his family May 30, 1912. They lived first in Utah, then Canadian, and Amarillo, where he grew up.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with combat service in France, then returned to Turkey to resume his business life.

He was married to Carrie Nola Campbell of Wellington in 1936 at Oklahoma City.

Mr. Salem gave much time to civic work and was a member of the American Legion, Lions Club and many other organizations. He was a leader in the Methodist Church at Turkey and active as a layman in the Northwest Texas Conference. it was his custom for many years to entertain all former Turkey pastors with a steak dinner at each session of the annual conference.

His gifts to charities of many kinds were all known in the area, and he was a generous donor to all church in his town.

Survivors are his wife and son, a brother, Joe Shadid of Sudan and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Haddad of Dallas.
