Lorene M. Stroud, 85, Lincoln, passed away Sunday (3/19/96) in Lincoln after a lengthy illness at The Monarch, a hospice facility. She was born April 1, 1920, in Bromide, Okla., where she spent her childhood, attending business college in Dallas in the late 1930s.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert H. Backhaus, a gunner in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in England during World War II. Albert was reported missing in action after a bombing run between England and Germany in January 1944. His plane was never found and he was officially declared dead at the end of WWII.

She remarried and is predeceased by her husband, Thomas M. Pierce, with whom she relocated to Holbrook in 1952, and was employed as office manager of the Frenchman Cambridge Irrigation District in Cambridge for 28 years until she retired and relocated to Lincoln in 1988. During her final years in Cambridge, she remarried and is predeceased by her husband, Samuel Stroud.

Lorene was a member of Eastern Star for 50 years, having been presented her 50-year pin in December 2005. She was also a member of the Swinging 8 Square Dancing Club with her long-term companion Richard Simonsen, who passed away in April 2005. Lorene will be remembered as an active, energetic and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She performed many acts of assistance and kindness for her family and large circle of friends, who were all in attendance at her 80th birthday celebration on April 1, 2000.

She had many interests throughout her life, including gardening, church choir, travel, reading, and in later years was an avid ballroom and square dancer. She was a member of Southern Heights Presbyterian Church. We thank her for her love, devotion, and friendship throughout her life. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by all.
