Those who are adding your tree on ancestry Please Note: This John Thomas Burge IS NOT the son of Andrew Steth Burge and Cornelia Elizabeth Burge of Fannin County Texas.

My grandfather, John Thomas Burge on this find a grave memorial was the son of Robert W. (R. W.) Burge and Cornelia Ann Burge. Citing Source; death index and family history records.

Also, Note my great-grandfather Robert W. (R. W.) Burge IS NOT the son of Andrew Steth Burge and Cornelia Elizabeth Burge of Fannin County Texas. Citing Source; death index, Probate Will, and family history records. Someone on ancestry merged two different Burge families together without reading or researching the source.

The tall white headstone next to John is his brother Robert Burge.

John never married; due to the miscegenation laws, Mariah (Dote) or her sister Jane. He had 15 Mulatto children between Mariah and Jane that lived to adulthood. On his death certificate and census, his marital status was single never married.

There's a discrepancy on John's date of birth. John's headstone date of birth is 1861. His death certificate shows his age at death was 84 in 1949 which would make his date of birth 1865. The 1940 census indicates his date of birth was 1865.

1880 census for Beat 5, Scott County, Mississippi listed the household of Cornella Burge 35 (widowed) born 1845 South Carolina, her children; John Burge 14, Robert Burge 12, James Burge 5 and Joseph Burge 2. All children born in Mississippi.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing. My father Carroll Denham Burge told me stories about his dad took his sons hunting and fishing. One story my dad told me; during a fishing trip, my dad got a fishing hook stuck in his hand and had a hard time getting the hook out. My father also said John was a good father to his children. On some of the census listed him as a farmer. The 1940 census listed his occupation as a Silversmith.

John and Jane had the following children:
Josie Holmes
Mable Holmes
Tennie Holmes
Nellie Holmes
Johnnie Holmes
Dewey Austin Holmes
John Thomas Holmes
Beatwood Holmes

Jane had a daughter Catherine Holmes but wasn't John's child

John and Mama Dote had the following children:
Olden Denham
Mary Ruth Denham
Carroll Denham Burge (my father)
LaMarr Burge
Richard Denham Burge
