Mr. Lewis, of 1504 Elm St., died Monday after a long illness.
He was born Dec. 8, 1892, in Murphysboro, the son of John Allen and Phoebe Potter Lewis, he was married Oct. 5, 1922, in Belleville, to Rose Mitchell.
Mr. Lewis was graduated from the University of Illinois 1aw School in 1918, and practiced law in the Murphysboro area 50 years. He was recognized as one of the leading criminal defensive specialists in the Southern Illinois area.
In 1969 Mr. Lewis was cited by both the Jackson County Bar Association and the Illinois Bar Association, and received certificates and medallions for 50 years of legal service.
Mr. Lewis was a member of the Illinois Bar Association and the Jackson County Bar Association, Murphysboro Elks Lodge 572, and Paul Stout Post 127 of the American Legion.
He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors are his wife; a son, Fletcher P. Lewis of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Fanny Gulley of La Grange, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and sisters, Mrs. Inez Johnson and Mrs. Georgia Schaaff, both of Newton, Conn.
