His tombstone no longer exists.
His parents were Joel Newsom (son of John) and Ann Nancy Aycock (daughter of Jesse Aycock.) He is related to some of the Aycocks in Bulloch County as some of his uncles also moved to Bulloch County around the time he did.He died between 1863-1870. In 1860, Jesse lived with his Aunt Winafred Aycock. In 1863 he was a witness in a legal transaction for the Henry T Beasley estate.

Jesse was part of the first Newsome (then Newsom) family in Bulloch County. He was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, lived in Wayne County, North Carolina as well and moved to Emanuel County (Summertown) by 1835 when he was awarded 180 acres there. Summertown is about 24 miles west of Millen. By 1850, they had moved to Bulloch County, near Clito.
In the 1840 Emanuel County census, there are 8 children: 5 boys and 2 girls under 9 yrs old and one girl age 15-19.
In the 1850 census, they are taking care of the children of Thaney Barnes but their own children in the home are listed as: Joseph age 29 and James age 16.
Why are all the boys in 1840 listed as under 9 yrs old but in 1850, there is a Joseph in the home born in 1821. He may be another relative and not a child. If Joel was born in 1832, where is he living in 1850? I know Henry died young but I am not sure what happened to Martha. She is on the 1860 census, but not the 1850 census. (unless she is a first wife of Ichabod or James and not their sister living with them in 1860 and she died before they married again)

He and his sons amassed several thousand acres of land.

He married Mary Barnes also of Wayne County, NC originally and presumably married around 1820-1830.
Joseph born 1821-this may be a relative and not a child in the home
Joel born 1832 died 1891
Ichabod Thomas born 1833 died 1894
Henry born 1834 died 1849 of a fever
James H Sr. born 1836 died 1903
Martha born 1839 died?

Jesse also helped keep or foster the children of Thaney Barnes (from NC as well). Those descendants also live in Bulloch Co. Thaney probably is NOT their daughter because she was born in 1815 when Jesse was 14 unless Mary had her with another man before she married Jesse. Thaney's husband may be the nephew of Mary Barnes or related to her instead of Thaney being the relative of Jesse and Mary.
