John Dobbel was born May 2, 1841 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. At the age of 13 he left Germany and came to San Francisco, Ca. He married Gaschen Bruns, when she was 18 years old on September 29, 1861. Around 1866, they bought a ranch in Hayward, where they raised their family. Their children were, Ernest, Annie, George, Mamie, Emma, Sophie, Julius and Hattie. John's only brother (Henry), came to America earlier, and had opened a restaurant across the street from the San Francisco Jail, where John peeled potatoes for Henry, and also carried meals to the prisoners. The tray he used is now at the San Mateo Historical Society Museum.
