Coroner's Inquest Records of Floyd Co., IN idicate that Emma Carnes died of dropsy of the heart four days after her husband, Peter Carnes' death.

"The funeral of Mrs. Emma Carnes took place this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence at East Sixth and Water streets. Rev. F. A. Steele conducted the religious service. Mrs. Carnes died Saturday evening of dropsy of the heart, of which she had been a sufferer for two or three years. She was the widow of Peter Carnes, killed on the 9th inst., by Archie Dye, in self defense. The burial was in Fairview Cemetery."
