OBITUARY
Hon. Alden Leland died at Holliston Thursday at 2:05 A.M. of typhoid dysentary. He was born in Chester, Vt., Nov. 30, 1807, his father the late Capt. Nathan Leland, removing to Holliston when the deceased was four months old. He received his education at Chester, Vt., and at Monson, Mass., academies. He early learned the trade of shoemaking, and commenced to manufacture in 1831, and had been in active business for over fifty years. During the last year or so his son has been associated with him under the firm name of Alden Leland & Co. Mr. Leland was a member of the Congregational Church, joining in 1853, had served the parish many times as Assessor and committee, and was a teacher in the Sunday School. He had held every office of note within the gift of the town, and had served as Moderator thirty times. He was a Republican in politics, and represented the town in the Legislature as Representative in 1838, '42, '48, and '52, and was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1853. In 1865-66 he was a State Senator, and in 1875-6 a member of the Governor's Council. At the organization of the Holliston Savings Bank in 1872, he became its President, and resigned upon the death of the late Wm. S. Hatchelder in 1876 to be President of the National Bank, which position he held at his death. When quite a young man he was appointed a Justice of the Peace, and for many years was a Trial Justice. He was twice married, his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Aratus Comey, of Newton, Mrs. J. H. Wilder, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and one son, Irving Leland, Esq., of Holliston, surviving him. The funeral will occur from his late residence on Monday at 2 P.M.
