Pioneer Corn Woman Is Honored on 95th Birthday
CORN- Last Friday was an eventful day for Mrs. Anna Bartel, widow of the late pioneer minister for the Corn Mennonite church. Relatives and friends from surrounding communities gathered at her home in Corn to pay homage on her ninety-fifth birthday.
Present for the occasion were 156 descendants -- including five generations of the Bartel family. She has eight children. Nine of her grandsons are ministers.
Her husband, the late P.H. Bartel, was minister of the Corn Mennonite church for 40 years, before his death in 1940. He was credited with breaking a church precedent by organizing the first Mennonite Sunday School in 1895.
P.H. Bartel's father, Henry Bartel, and 11 other men were founders of the Mennonite church in Russia 100 years ago. Mennonite congregations throughout the world are observing the centennial event this year.
The elder Bartel came to the United States in 1872 and settled in Kansas, near Hutchison.
Church leaders, relatives and friends Friday heard Mrs. Anna Bartel recount her experiences when the family moved to the Cooperton community in 1901 and later to Corn in 1909.
