James Earl Allred, known to all as Jim, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to John Norman and Joanne Allred on May 22, 1948. Jim passed Friday, July 23 after a scrappy spirited battle against cancer. Jim and his brother, John, grew up in Kansas City, where they went to Southeast High School, class of ’66. Jim later graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1970.
The Lake of the Ozarks became a part of the Allred family in the 50’s where the family built a cabin. Jim moved to Sunrise Beach in the late 70’s to live in the place he loved most - the Lake of the Ozarks. Jim lived modestly monetarily; however, he lived a rich man’s life. His riches were comprised of endearing friendships, love of his family, and having fun. Jim’s favorite past times were playing the bass guitar, “coving out” (before the new bridge was built), camping, canoeing, and playing in the sun with his friends and family.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Joanne, his grandson, Jake Phillip, and a son, Joshua Reeves. He is survived by his life partner, Diane Schlegel and her family; her son Todd and his wife Lisa and their daughter Ciarra; her daughter Tera and her children, Blake, Taylor and Kelsie; his son James Peter “Pete” Allred and his wife Erinn and grandchildren Portia, Petra and Dean of Bellingham, Washington; his daughter Jennifer Joanne “Jody” and James Plum-Allred of Renton, Washington; his brother John N. Allred (Jr.) and his wife Donna of Leawood, Kansas and their children Sam, Brett, Jackie, and Jenna. Lastly, he is survived by his father, John N. Allred (Sr.) of Laurie.
Those who knew Jim, loved Jim. His wit, voice, character, and charisma charmed everyone around him. A man’s man, who could fix anything, one who always leant a helping hand, one who made music, one who made people laugh and loved life; this was Jim Allred. He was the life of the party and will be missed more than words can describe – he will be remembered as “a true Ozark Legend.”
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 28, at the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. A reception will be held following the service from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Osage River Reception Hall on south Highway 5 in Laurie. Memorial contributions are suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Gateway Area Chapter, Memorials and Tributes, 1867 Lackland Hill Parkway, St. Louis, Missouri, 63146.
