Alan Bellingham Cleborne was the youngest child of Rear Admiral Christopher Cleborne and Jane Parker Cleborne. He was born in Maine while his father was stationed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and grew up in various cities, principally Richmond, Virginia. After receiving his medical degree, he worked for a time as an assistant physician (his internship) in Brooklyn, New York, then went to the United States Marine hospital in Savannah, Georgia.
