He voluntarily served in the U.S. Army including 6 months during the winter of 1945 shortly after the Battle of the Bulge in World War II in the Central European Campaign. He graduated from Indiana Technical College with the degree of BS Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a mechanical engineer at several companies and he retired in 1991. He attended the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church of Union City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Elaine Chapin Carter, in 1985, whom he married April 18, 1959; his sister, Florence Ellen Wright in 1993; and his brother, Harley "Lee" John Carter in 2000.
Survivors include a son, Bruce Carter, of Union City.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
