Major League Baseball Player, Broadcaster. For twelve seasons (1964, 1966 to 1967 and 1969 to 1977), he played at the first base and outfielder positions with the New York Yankees, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics. Born James Michael Hegan, the son of former All-Star and longtime Major League catcher Jim Hegan, he first achieved athletic greatness during his years at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland. He continued on the collegiate level at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and after one year, he was signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent (1961). He marked his Major League debut on September 13, 1964 and replaced an injured Tony Kubek on the World Series roster. Hegan appeared in 3 games during the 1964 Fall Classic. He spent the next three years playing sparsely and was acquired by the Seattle Pilots during Major League Baseball's expansion prior to the 1969 season. Hegan had the distinction of being on Seattle's roster during their inaugural season of 1969 and earned all-star status that year. He remained with the franchise after their relocation to Milwaukee in 1970 and during the 1971 season, he was acquired by the Athletics. While with Oakland in 1972, he had tremendous success in the role of pinch-hitter and part-time first baseman, as he produced a .329 batting average. He went on to experience a world championship with the Athletics that year. Hegan had second stints with the Yankees and Brewers, prior to concluding his playing career following the 1977 season. In 965 regular season games, he compiled 504 hits with a .242 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, Hegan served as a broadcaster with the Brewers for more than ten years and from 1990 until 2011, he was paired with Tom Hamilton for Cleveland Indians' games. He was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
